Chat: Add a daily streak mechanic like Duolingo.
Me: Like "Congrats, you've cried three days in a row, keep the streak alive!"?
And that's exactly why we still can't hand product management over to AI.
Yes, AI is a fantastic tool to speed us up. I use it all the time. But if you don't understand human behavior, product value, and context, AI will happily generate polished nonsense.
The Psychology App Retention Trap
Here's what happens when you blindly apply best practices from one domain to another. Duolingo's streak mechanic works because language learning benefits from daily repetition. The more consecutive days you practice, the better you retain vocabulary and grammar patterns. Miss a day, and you genuinely lose progress.

But therapy and coaching apps operate on completely different principles:
Retention doesn't mean "come back every day." It means coming back when you need it, whether that's weekly, biweekly, or in moments of crisis.
People need space between sessions to process and reflect. Therapists schedule sessions with gaps for a reason. Insights need time to settle. Behavioral changes need time to practice in real life.
Therapy works on rhythm, not streaks. The goal isn't to build a habit of opening an app. It's to build emotional resilience, self awareness, or healthier patterns, which happen over weeks and months, not consecutive days.
Real Examples of Getting It Wrong
I've seen meditation apps push daily notifications that stress users out about missing their "calm time." I've watched mental health journals guilt users with "You haven't checked in today" messages, turning self care into another source of anxiety. One coaching app I consulted for was sending three reminders a day because their AI analysis showed "higher engagement with more touchpoints." Users were uninstalling because it felt invasive.
The irony? Lower frequency, more intentional engagement would have resulted in better retention. But AI looked at the data and saw: more prompts equals more opens equals success.
What AI Misses
This knowledge exists in the data, but AI didn't connect the dots. It couldn't empathize. It saw patterns in app opens but didn't understand the emotional weight of opening a therapy app versus opening a game. It compared DAU (daily active users) across categories without recognizing that good mental health engagement looks completely different from good social media engagement.
AI can tell you that Headspace has high retention. It can't tell you that Headspace works because it meets people in moments of need, not because it nags them daily. That understanding requires context, empathy, and domain knowledge.
The Real Gap
AI can crunch workflows, map Opportunity Solution Trees, generate user personas, and make the output look smart. It can analyze cohorts, suggest A/B tests, and write PRDs faster than any human. But it doesn't yet feel what makes sense for humans in a specific context.
A good PM knows that a feature working in one app doesn't mean it'll work in yours. They know that increasing engagement metrics isn't always the goal. Sometimes the best product decision is to show up less, not more.
Which means the product manager's role today is to know when the machine is wrong, and why.
It's asking: Does this recommendation actually serve the user's deeper need? Does it align with how this specific problem should be solved? Does it respect the context we're operating in?
AI is a co pilot, not the captain. And if you don't understand the human side of the product deeply enough to course correct when AI suggests "just add streaks," you're building features, not solving problems.
